We saw few episodes of “Tidying up with Marie Kondo” on Netflix. It’s about decluttering your house, getting rid of things that you are not going to use.
It’s truly amazing how much people can horde over the years. We all have been guilty of it.
Marie Kondo has a whole process to start decluttering called KonMari.
The KonMari Method is Marie Kondo’s minimalism-inspired approach to tackling your stuff category-by-category rather than room-by-room. There are six basic rules to get started:
- Commit yourself to tidy up.
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle.
- Finish discarding first. Before getting rid of items, sincerely thank each item for serving its purpose.
- Tidy by category, not location.
- Follow the right order.
- Ask yourself it sparks joy.
And five categories to tackle:
- Clothes
- Books
- Papers
- Komono (a.k.a. Miscellaneous Items)
- Sentimental Items
I think if I had to apply 80-20 rule to this and select one thing, that has the most effective compared to others, will be “Ask yourself if it sparks joy”.
My theme of 2019 is “Hack away until only the essential remains”.
It is much easier to remove what’s causing pain than adding things that make us happy. Asking yourself if that thing sparks joy, is a very effective method to get to achieve that.
