Zubi Zubi Zu..

 

This past week I have watched this clip from mad men a number of times. Its fun and playful.

Mad Men is one of my all-time favorite drama. Its set in 1960s New York during the golden age of advertisement. The story mostly follows Don Draper who is a creative director of one of the top ad firms in New York.

This clip takes place on Don’s birthday. At this point, Don is a name partner at Sterling Cooper Draper Price. Megan was his assistant and now his second wife. Megan is quite younger than him.

The song is catchy and Jessica Paré’s performance is a perfect balance between entertainment and tease. The scene is visually appealing (as is most of Mad Men).

Let me nerd out for a minute. The 60s in the US was a very interesting time and there were some major cultural shifts. From the civil rights movement to the moon landing. The new generation of the 60s US is comfortable with performing in front of strangers, they are comfortable with their sexuality, race and stand for what they believe in. In contrast to the older generation who are more conservative and personal.

Don is stuck in between the two. He is old fashioned but likes to experience the new. I think the director shows this by the way he has blocked the scene. Don seems to be the one dividing the room between the two worlds.

All of Megan’s friends are on the opposite side of the room than Don’s colleges.

The best part of this scene is after her performance when Roger Sterling asks his young second wife, “Why don’t you sing like that”. She replies, “Why don’t you look like him”.
